Chapter Fourteen

The Mustangs lost.

Gray blamed Dru.

No matter what was going on in his lousy home life when he’d been young, no matter his injuries and how much his body pained him, no matter the concerns in his personal life, he had always been able to focus solely on football while he was on the field.

Gray reclined his airplane seat. It was Sunday evening, and he and the rest of the team were flying home to Dallas while the sky darkened from the bright orange of sunset to the gray of night. Reggae played softly through his earbuds. Gray tried to let the music wash over him and calm him.

It wasn’t working.

It had been ridiculously cold, of course, in Massachusetts. Snow had fallen on them during the game. It had created a field of slush and turned the ball slippery. Hits always hurt worse in subfreezing temperatures, and the Patriots defense had been a beast, relentlessly rushing Corbin.

Even so, none of that accounted for his average play today. He hated playing average. He’d played average because Dru had been on his mind. While he’d dressed in the locker room and listened to the coaches talk, he’d thought about how much he missed her. On the sidelines, he’d remembered every detail of what she’d looked like when she’d come to stand next to him at the window, tilted her face up, and met his eyes. On the field, jogging to the line of scrimmage, he’d recalled her smooth voice saying, “You’re not allowed to tell a woman you love her when you’re drunk.”

The gorgeous brunette with the turquoise eyes had distracted him during a game. Which was bad. She’d also cracked his connection with Corbin, a connection that had been in place for eight years and had never before been challenged.

He and Corbin had hung out together on this trip as usual. They’d laughed and ribbed each other. But resentment toward his friend had been stirring deep inside Gray the entire time. It had put them out of sync with one another on the field.

Groaning silently, he brought up a hand and rubbed his scalp.

He hated to play average. And he hated to lose.

Dru’s night out with Corbin had been one of the worst nights Gray’d had in a long, long time. He’d been restless and angry, and those two things had combined to make him desperate for alcohol.

The alcohol had only worsened his restlessness and anger. He’d been unable to stand the fact that he was cooped up in Dru’s house with Weston and Fi while Dru was across town with Corbin.

His first boneheaded move had been to try to leave. His second boneheaded move had been telling Dru he thought he loved her. He regretted both.

He couldn’t believe the thought of loving Dru had even crossed his mind, much less that he’d made the mistake of speaking it out loud to her.

What an idiot thing to have said. He didn’t love her.

He dropped his wrists onto the armrests. Irritated with himself, he turned his face to the side, trying to find a comfortable position.
